Eoin Rheinisch
(Salmon Leap) will take to the river Sava at 15.45 hrs. tomorrow
attempting to lead the field at the Canoe Slalom World Championships at
Tacen, 10k outside the capital of Slovenia, Ljubliana. With a top 20
World ranking Eoin has only 16 boats starting behind him in the
qualification race and a top 20 result on the first run would be good
enough to see him qualify for the semi-finals on Saturday. In June,
1991, a mere week before the break-up of Yugoslavia, Ian Wiley took 5th
place at the World Championships on this same course. Tacen, as the
artificial race course is called, comprises a 2 metre drop followed by a
sloping 3 metre drop, with surges and strong eddies from start to
finish on the sub two minute long course. Today the unpredictability of
the conditions was reflected in the performance of Hannah Craig who
qualified for the next round with a competitive 29th place finish on
her first run but who like almost half the field got a 50 second penalty
on her second run. Lets hope that tomorrow Eoin can follow in Ian
Wileys wake and set himself up for the World class result that he is
capable of. Also competing in Men's kayak tomorrow are Ciaran Heurteau
(Team Amadonsa) and Patrick Hynes (Celbridge Paddlers). Results will be
